When Kelsey Gibbons visited Eastern last week, I truly didn’t know what to expect. With her expertise in political reporting, I figured she would have given a mini lecture on the do’s and dont’s of covering politics in Illinois (aka the meca political reporting). Turned out, she talked about her journey to where she is and the many adversities she faced. She mentioned “being told no” and that truly stuck with me. I’ve been told no so much because of the lack of what I know. I listened to her, as she spoke about sticking to what you love to do and push to do better, regardless of what others around you say or do. I also had the privilege of having lunch with her and she is quiet the funny woman. We talked about her craziest stories and the staff she works with. It was quite uplifting to hear from a minority reporter about being successful in the business. I will always remember her (especially since I have her number too!).
