All the hype for the fight of the century was put to an end after floyd’s unanimous victory over Manny Pacquiao. The boxer remains undefeated sitting at a 48-0 record. The fight grossed around 300 million with a pay out of 60/40 in favor of Mayweather, the boxer collected upwards of 180 million. Floyd consistently remains the highest paid athlete of our time and after this fight his career earnings in 48 fights is around 600 million US dollars.
Many argue that this fight was bad for boxing others argue that it was good for boxing the underlying issue lies in the sport itself. In the past 5 years this was the only fight that has brought any major media attention to the sport and now that its over is it safe to assume boxing is as well. Boxing has turned into an event and less of a sport surrenduring itself to its fighting counterpart Mixed Martial Arts. Finding a good MMA fight with well known fighters is much easier and relevant today than in boxing which usually is only on pay per view TV.
12 rounds and 40 minutes in the ring killed boxing as a sport, maybe it’s because the fight didn’t live up to the hype or the fact that boxing has been dead for awhile. Whether you thought this fight was disappointing or exciting it remains said that a lot of money was spent and a lot was made and this event will go down as the fight of the century.
